Personal Safety Suggestions for Students

  • Stay alert and attuned to the people and circumstances around you.
  • Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid the person or leave.
  • Report any person(s) who appear to be suspicious or make you feel uncomfortable.
  • Don't hesitate to report suspicious activity immediately to the security department or police.
  • Project a calm and confident demeanor and act as if you know where you're going, even if you don't.
  • If you feel someone is following you, change your direction or cross the street. If they persist, quickly move to the nearest open business or group of people and ask for help.
  • Familiarize yourself with your neighborhood and campus, including late-night or early-morning accessible buildings, and know where to seek help when needed.
  • Be aware of the locations of campus emergency phones and use them without hesitation.
  • Choose ATMs located inside buildings or well-lit areas. Whenever possible, use on-campus ATMs.
  • Avoid counting cash at the machine or in public areas; wait until you are in a secure location.
  • Obtain a whistle from the Campus Safety & Security Department and carry it with you at all times. Use the whistle to draw attention if you are in danger.
  • Utilize the escort service during late evening or early morning hours or whenever you feel unsafe or uncomfortable walking alone.
  • Stick to well-lit walkways at night. Criminals are less likely to strike in well-lit areas. Avoid dark alleys, streets, or secluded paths, and refrain from taking shortcuts.
  • Refrain from using cell phones, iPods, or MP3 players while walking. Suspects may target these items if they are visible.
  • Avoid giving money to panhandlers. Don't engage in unnecessary conversations, and never invite them into apartments or dorms.
  • Never accept rides from strangers. If approached, ignore them and report to Hopkins security.
  • Carry a "disposable" wallet or purse with a small amount of money. If an assailant attempts to rob you, surrender it.
  • Always lock your dorm or apartment when leaving, regardless of the reason.
